Development of preparing for oil spill prevention in the Archipelago Sea area (OIL)

The aim of the OIL project is to support the regional emergency services in reinforcing the oil spill prevention preparedness in the Archipelago Sea area. The project develops the cooperation between interest groups through regional and interregional table top exercise activities. Because of the special qualities of the Archipelago Sea, developing oil spill prevention within the operational area of Southwest Finland Emergency Services is especially challenging. Thus the cooperation between interest groups in preparing and implementing oil spill prevention is vitally important.

Risk areas, logistic points and nature and livelihood destinations, among others, are mapped along the Uusikaupunki–Nauvo and Utö–Hanko shipping channels in the Archipelago Sea. The material created by the project will be produced as compatible with the BORIS Oil Response Information System and submitted also for the use of the Finnish Environment Institute.

Because of heavy traffic, the risk of an oil spill in the Archipelago Sea is high, and the shipping channels in the area go through especially sensitive living environments and sea area. In terms of oil spill prevention, the Archipelago Sea is especially challenging. The fragmented coastline and its length along with lacking road connections pose special challenges for the logistics and equipment used in oil spill prevention and cleaning.
