JOO studies (Flexible Study Right)

Degree students, post-graduate degree students and exchange students of the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi University, Diaconia University of Applied Sciences, Novia University of Applied Sciences and Humak University of Applied Sciences may apply for a fixed-period right to complete JOO studies at Turku University of Applied Sciences (JOO stands for Joustava opinto-oikeus, flexible right to study).

Students completing JOO studies at Turku University of Applied Sciences (TUAS) participate in the ordinary instruction of the courses, and complete the same studies as the degree students of Turku University of Applied Sciences. One cannot acquire a degree at Turku University of Applied Sciences by completing JOO studies.

Only students who are currently enrolled at the institution can participate in the instruction or exams. JOO studies are to be accredited in the student’s degree, and thus cannot be completed after graduation. A student who already has the right to complete a degree at Turku University of Applied Sciences, and whose studies towards the degree in question are incomplete, cannot be granted a right to JOO studies.

The flexible right to study does not apply to studies at the Open University of Applied Sciences or studies at the Finnish Online University of Applied Sciences.

Student benefits Student financial aid is applied for through the home institution for the applicant’s initial degree studies. A student completing JOO studies cannot become a member of the TUAS Student Union.

The flexible study right does not apply to studies at the Open University, Open University of Applied Sciences or virtual studies in other universities or universities of applied sciences.
JOO studies are free of charge for students.

The application deadline for studies starting in the autumn term is 30 April, and for studies starting in the spring term, 31 October.

Students of University of Turku, Åbo Akademi University and Humak University of Applied Sciences apply for JOO studies at Turku University of Applied Sciences by using an online form.

The student must attach a transcript of records to the application. For the granting of the study right, the applicant must ask for a recommendation from the home institution in the application form. The home institution decides on a case by case basis which studies it recommends.

The application process is continuous. The student has to apply for JOO studies at least six weeks before the course applied for begins. Please note that applications are not processed during holiday seasons (e.g. during 1 June–31 July).

JOO studies at Turku University of Applied Sciences are applied for using this application form (PDF). (linkki) Each study module or course unit must be applied for individually by filling in the application form for each degree programme. The student must attach a transcript of records to the application.

For the granting of the study right, the applicant must ask for a recommendation from the home institution in the application form. The home institution decides on a case by case basis which studies it recommends.
 
* Students of Diaconia University of Applied Sciences return the application to the student counselling office at their own Diak unit. The Student Counsellor will decide on the recommendation and forward the application for further processing.
 
* Students of Novia University of Applied Sciences return the application to their Head of Degree Programme, who will decide on the recommendation. After this the student will deliver the application to the student counselling office at Novia Turku unit (Nunnankatu 4, 20700 Turku)

The right to complete JOO studies at Turku University of Applied Sciences is granted on the basis of the application by the Degree Programme Manager of the degree programme in question.

Information of the decision and instructions for registering to Turku University of Applied Sciences will be sent to the applicant to the address stated on the application form. The right to study is applicable only to the studies the applicant has been granted a study right for. The right to study becomes effective when Turku University of Applied Sciences has granted the applicant the right to complete studies recommended by the applicant’s home institution. The right to study is valid for the period of time stated in the decision (for a maximum of two years), or at the most for the duration of the student’s right to study at their home institution.

An official transcript of records is issued by Open Studies at TUAS, Joukahaisenkatu 3 A, 20520 Turku. The students must themselves make sure that their completed credits are recorded in the student register of their home institution.
