Turku University of Applied Sciences Ltd has been founded
Turku University of Applied Sciences Ltd has been entered in the Trade Register of the National Board of Patents and Registration of Finland on 1 February, 2013. In the first meeting of the Board of Turku University of Applied Sciences Ltd held on Wednesday, Special Adviser Sami Savolainen was appointed as Managing Director of the company in the preparation stage.
The shareholders of TUAS Ltd are the City of Turku with a 91% share and the City of Salo with a 9% share in the company. Both cities are represented in the Board of TUAS Ltd. Former Deputy Mayor Jouko K. Lehmusto is the chair of the Board. The City of Turku executes the incorporation of Turku University of Applied Sciences starting 1 January, 2014.
TUAS holds attraction
Turku University of Applied Sciences is a multidisciplinary educational community of approx. 9,500 students and 800 experts. The operations of Turku University of Applied Sciences are guided by Innovation Pedagogy which refers to combining teaching and RDI so that all the learning is as working life oriented as possible. The strategic aim of TUAS is that the majority of its graduates will find employment in the region of Southwest Finland. Over the last years, this has come well true. Over 80% of graduates find employment in the region. Every year, TUAS collaborates with more than 3,600 organisations.
New limited company
The main duties of the founded company are to prepare the company to receive the TUAS operations into the company on 1 January 2014 and to apply for a new license for UAS operations. The license to provide UAS education regulates on the education responsibility and other prerequisites for operations.
The founding of Turku University of Applied Sciences Ltd is based on the second stage of the UAS reform prepared by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture (OKM). The second stage should become effective from 1 January, 2015. In the second stage, the responsibility for UASs’ basic funding as a whole will be transferred to the government, and UASs will be made independent legal persons. The aim is to reinforce UASs’ prerequisites to better match the changing future development needs of the working life, society, and regions with high-quality education and research and development work.
The UASs are maintained by municipalities, federations of municipalities, independent limited companies, or foundations. At the moment, as Turku University of Applied Sciences still is maintained by the City of Turku, the UASs’ maintainers who operate under the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture are divided as follows:
