Preparatory programme for higher education studies in English | 30 cr

In the preparatory programme, you will develop skills required in higher education studies. You will also receive personal career guidance and counselling to help you to find your future study path.

The programme focuses on improving your English language level. You develop your academic skills, increase your knowledge of Finnish higher education studies and brush up your digital and mathematical skills. In addition to English language studies, the programme also includes Finnish or Swedish language studies.

Preparatory Programme for Higher Education Studies in English (shortened as ‘PrepProg’) project is a joint project between nine Universities of Applied Sciences in Finland.

Eligibility to apply, duration & price

The programme is aimed at immigrants, whose aim is to study in English at a Finnish higher education institution.

NOTE: Due to funding restrictions, the preparatory programme in 2023–2024 is only for people who have fled Ukraine and have temporary protection in Finland.

You can be selected for the programme, if your English language level is at least B1. (The evaluation table for language skill level)

Extent and duration: 30 cr, 5 months

Starting date: 12.9.2023

Price: The programme is free of charge for those receiving temporary protection.

How to apply?

Application period is from 19th of June to 20th of August 2023.

Apply online in Studyinfo . For a valid application, you need to attach a copy of your residence permit and/or a MIGRI decision letter that shows that you have temporary protection in Finland. 

When applying, you need to choose the professional field that you are most interested about: 

  • Business Administration
  • Social Services and Health Care
  • Engineering
  • Other, non-specific field

Applicants who meet the criteria will be invited to entrance exam via email. 

Entrance exam

The entrance exam is held on site at different campuses of participating University of Applied Sciences network across Finland on 25th of August 2023. When you fill in your application form, please choose which University of Applied Sciences you want to attend for the exam. 

The entrance exam has two parts: 1) written exam and 2) group interview. Both the written exam and the group interview will test and assess your English language level, motivation and ability to start studies.

Student selection and accepting the study place

After the entrance exam, we will send you an email and notify you in the beginning of September 2023 if you have been chosen for the programme.

If you have been selected for this programme, you must accept your study place within 7 days from us sending the information to you. Your acceptance letter will have instructions what you need to do in order to accept your study place. Please note, if you do not formally accept your study place in accordance with the instructions, you cannot start your studies.

Implementation method

The programme is full-time study, about 34 hours per week. You will study independently and in groups. In online studies, it is important to be active and take responsibility for your own learning.  

The programme is held online in English, and you can participate regardless of where you live. The online meetings are organized daily. Studying online requires a computer, internet connection, a headset and a webcam.

If you wish, you can participate in some face-to-face meetings at one of the nearest participating UAS campuses.

Applying for degree education

The preparatory programme does not grant direct access to degree studies, but application to degree education takes place through joint application or path studies.
