The LIFE-IP BIODIVERSEA project is Finland's largest contribution to the conservation of species and habitats in the Baltic Sea to date.

LIFE-IP BIODIVERSEA will map marine areas to identify their natural values, monitor the evolution of already mapped areas, create a more effective network of protected areas, study the human impact on marine nature, develop sustainable nature tourism and provide information on the importance of marine nature and the need to protect it.

Turku University of Applied Sciences will focus on reviewing and completing the network of marine protected areas in Åland. The mapping and identification of new protected areas will be carried out in close cooperation with the Åland Provincial Government, Åbo Akademi and the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK).

Information will be collected on underwater habitats and their species, fisheries, and areas of importance for seabirds and marine mammals.
