WoHealth − Empowering immigrant women in supporting their and their families' health and wellbeing

The project ended in March, 2021. The project Wohealth aimed at empowerment of women in their knowledge and skills in health and wellbeing issues, by means of education and peer support, in Finland and in Sweden.

To reach this goal the project organised workshops / study groups, created and tested a training program for peer supporters and developed easy-access, easy-to-read material in relevant topics. The material will also improve collaboration between immigrant clients and health care professionals e.g. in children and maternity clinics.

In spite of COVID-19 pandemic, we were able to implement the project plan. Education and training of peer supporters took place in August-September 2020 in Finland, with more than ten potential peer supporters. Some of them volunteered already. Teaching home Hovirinta offers now a place and counselling for them. In need of a peer supporter or volunteering for peer supporting, contact Minna Maanpää at Teaching home Hovirinta (minna.maanpaa@sateenkaarikoto.fi).

In Sweden, at the Refugee Health Centre in Norrköping, health mediators continue to organize study circles for women. Health mediators are peer supporters, but also have a formal qualification in health care. For further information, contact emira.hasanov@regionostergotland.se.
