A visually impaired student's report made a difference

Sometimes small, everyday observations can lead to big changes. For the first time, Turku University of Applied Sciences is organizing an accessibility week. The week will culminate in a Valentine's Day accessibility webinar on 14 February 2023.

The idea for Accessibility Week came from student intern Lara Febles, who explored all the learning spaces at Turku UAS with her guide dog Mister H. Lara recorded her findings in an impressive presentation and inspired others to get involved.

The collaboration between the Future Learning Design team and Lara resulted in an Accessibility Week, during which information on accessibility is shared with staff and students at Turku UAS.

– As a visually impaired student, I can highlight things that are not necessarily noticed in everyday life in higher education, says Lara.

Accessibility contact person to promote accessibility for all

The issues Lara raised also led to a concrete, significant improvement: an accessibility contact person will be appointed at Turku UAS during spring 2023. Accessibility will be looked at from the perspective of physical, digital and social accessibility, among others.

– The appointment of the contact person will significantly contribute to the necessary development work, says Chief Advisor Marjo Joshi.

– Accessibility in higher education is everyone's business and we can all play our part in making it happen.
