Simulation Excellence Center serves health care operators

In a simulated learning environment, students and health care professionals can safely practise their skills in exercises reflecting real-life care situations.

The simulation center is equipped with state-of-the-art simulation devices and hospital equipment, with 11 different simulation facilities. The simulated learning environments are located on Ruiskatu campus, Turku, and on Salo campus.

Versatile simulation

The simulation center offers diverse opportunities to utilize simulations in teaching, research and business.

– The purpose is to utilize simulation innovatively. The center also suits for product development, testing and competence evaluation, says Research Group Leader Riitta-Liisa Lakanmaa from Turku University of Applied Sciences.

Teaching through simulation can also be utilized in the Master’s and continuing studies in the field of health care, as well as in courses and trainings tailored for companies and organisations. 

Towards cooperation in the new Medisiina D building

– At the moment, the simulation premises at Ruiskatu are used for organizing teaching and continuing education for health care students. In addition, we have research, development and innovation projects either ongoing or at the planning stage with the aim to develop the utilization of simulation in learning, Lakanmaa describes.

At the end of 2018, the health care operations of Turku University of Applied Sciences will move to Kupittaa campus and Medisiina D building.

– The new building will house modern simulation environments, which we have planned multiprofessionally together with University of Turku and the Hospital District of Southwest Finland. We are currently creating models and procedures for the future. Simulation Excellence Center ExiSim represents one step to this direction, Lakanmaa crystallizes.
