Turku UAS’ support services for students

The increased strain on higher education students has lately been a popular topic in the media. Turku UAS has compiled the support services offered to students as a list on the website. We are also actively monitoring the impacts of distance education.

Student counselling and tutoring

Study Counselling Psychologists

You can and should contact the Study Counselling Psychologists! We will see you remotely either by phone or via a video call.

Tutor teachers

The tutor teacher guides you in planning the studies and other concrete, study-related questions, and directs you forward in problem situations. 

  • Contact information: You can find tutor teachers names on the home page of your degree programme in Messi.

 

Study counsellors

The study counsellor participates in study counselling in situations that require broader expertise in counselling (for example when the student has serious problems with progressing in their studies, the overall aims of the studies are not clear, there is a risk of interrupting the studies or the student has learning difficulties) and, if necessary, directs the student to special services.

Student chaplains

The student chaplain’s services are available for all members of the Turku UAS community, regardless of their personal conviction. You can contact the student chaplain when you are looking for someone to have a confidential discussion with on any topic in your life.

Student Office services

Please contact the Student Office when you need advice e.g., on the right to study, enrolment as present or absent or graduation.

Official study certificate and transcript of records are now available in Peppi. Other than degree students can upload only the transcript of records.

The documents are electronically signed by using the validation of the Population Register Centre (on the last page). Instructions for verifying electronic documents are on our website:  www.turkuamk.fi/varmennus

You can find the documents in Peppi student's desktop by selecting “Orders” in the navigation bar.

MOI services

For students with a foreign background, we provide services which support the progress to higher education studies.

MOI has on-call duty on Teams every Friday at 9–10. In the Teams discussions, we solve problems or chat about our everyday lives. You can join the meeting when it suits you, you don’t have to register for the meeting.

Peer tutors (for degree students) and international student tutors (for exchange students)

Peer tutors and international student tutors know their way around the study location and the UAS, and they know where to look for more information. Their primary task is to help new students get started in their studies.

  • Contact information: The tutors’ contact information is available in the Home base in itslearning. The student tutors also establish WhatsApp groups, in which the communication mostly takes place. If you don’t know who the peer tutor of your group is, you can ask your Study Counsellor.
  • Exchange students will be sent the contact information of their student tutor by email before their arrival in Turku.

 

Student union TUO

You can contact the Student Union in all situations related to the studies. An Advisor from the Student Union will help and support the student in solving the situation. The Advisor can also help you to find the correct place to take the issue to.

TUO has its own Discord channel, where you can post questions using an alias. TUO’s specialists and other students using the channel answer the questions.

IT facilities

Service Desk provides support and instructions, when you need help with IT devices, software or information systems that are used at TUAS. Contact Service Desk when you have questions, notice a problem that requires fixing or want to give feedback on the IT services.

Support requests and fault reports can be submitted 24 hours a day. Messages are processed during office hours.

Other services

Health care services for degree students

The telephone service of FSHS serve on weekdays. You will receive a call-back within one weekday.

Through FSHS, you can seek an appointment with a Psychiatric Nurse, Psychologist or Psychiatrist.

The national numbers for booking an appointment serve on weekdays at 8:00–13:00: General and mental health tel. 046 710 1073 and oral health tel. 046 710 1085. A call-back will take place within two weekdays.

The Self online service is at your disposal, but SelfChat is closed for the time being.

  • The FSHS services are available for degree students only, not for exchange students.

 

Nyyti Ry 

Nyyti is an association which promotes the mental health and ability to study of students, and it organizes webinars and chats.
The Nyyti chat is a place for exchanging ideas and experiences. In the group chat targeted at students, you can discuss different issues related to students’ everyday life.

You can access the chat completely anonymously and no registration is required beforehand.

Projects

More inclusion and community-orientation to higher education institutions

Student Union TUO, together with four other student unions, have received special funding from the Ministry of Education and Culture for a project to develop community-orientation and improve students’ well-being.

The project aims at developing operational methods for students’ community-orientation and inclusion in higher education institutions which suit the distance learning times better. 

 

A project developing the welfare officer activities at Turku UAS

The subproject has received MINEDU funding and the project plan is currently in the works. With the project, the support services for students will significantly improve, as welfare officer activities aimed at students will start at Turku UAS in autumn 2021.
